The first tablet to be produced in Australia will be available in 30, 60, and 90mg doses, and the tablets will be sold over-the-counter for $2.50 each.
Men who have been told to stop taking the tablets will be able to return for a free consultation with a GP. If the patient decides to stop taking the tablets, they will be eligible for a free Viagra or other similar treatment if they meet US Food and Drug Administration criteria.
In the US, Viagra is the drug’s generic name. Other generic versions of Viagra include Cialis and Levitra.
Dr Scott Campbell, chief of medicine at the Men’s Health Research Institute in Toronto, told the Guardian that the new tablet will “remain the most widely used ED drug”.
He said the new tablet “would provide men with a new way for them to regain confidence and have sex again”.
The tablets are a modified version of the popular Viagra and are made by Pfizer and are sold as a 100mg capsule.
Erectile dysfunction drugs are known as PDE5 inhibitors.
